Sport: Badminton
I grew up as a county tennis player but made the switch to badminton at the age of 14, quickly discovering a natural flair for the sport.
Since then, I have competed on the national senior circuit, winning multiple medals at tournaments across the UK and previously ranking within the top 100 players in England.
I am proud to represent my county as part of the first team, while also sharing my passion for the game as a Badminton England Level 2 qualified coach. I deliver a range of sessions for individuals, small groups, and large groups, helping players of all abilities develop their skills and love for the sport.
I have played badminton since the age of 8, when my father, who had recently taken up the sport, took me along to the local badminton club in Stamford, Lincolnshire, to hit shuttles behind the stage, while the adult members played games on the two court mats in the social club dance hall. I enjoyed the experience and joined a junior badminton club locally, eventually began playing matches, and progressed to the junior county squad, to receive coaching, then progressed to senior county sides, until making the first team for Lincolnshire when I was 18.
I retired from Senior County at the age of 30, having captained the County for 2 seasons, to focus on business and family life.
Encouraged by my younger sister Gill, who also played at junior, senior and latterly masters county level, I returned to Lincolnshire playing in masters over 50’s and over 55’s in the intercounty championships and national divisions.
I’m currently a member of badminton clubs in South Lincolnshire and Cambridgeshire, play Masters badminton for Lincs and play in national and international tournaments at Masters (Europe & World Seniors)
While I’ve not won an international tournament (yet – still work in progress despite now being 61), I competed in the World Senior Championships in Spain in 2021, reaching the 3rd Round in over 50’s Men’s Doubles, and in the European Championships during 2024, reaching the 3rd Round in over 55’s singles and men’s doubles. I’m striving to take a further step this year, representing England in Thailand at the 2025 World Senior Championships at over 55 men’s singles, over 60’s men’s doubles and over 55’s mixed doubles (playing with my sister Gill) in a field of over 1600 players of age groups from 35+ to 75+ (so even if I don’t success, there’s is more time yet to keep competing)
Lincolnshire is a large geographic county, and so it has always been challenging to build participation at the county level. In 2025, Lincolnshire County BA decided to build a level 2 coaching capability, with myself and 6 others taking the BE level 2 coaching course. Our aim is to develop and support regional academies in Lincolnshire to encourage and build badminton participation at Junior ages, through interaction with clubs/schools and leisure/sports centres in the county.
I have played badminton since the age of 7, inspired by family members who have played the sport. Notably, one of my brothers, Harley, achieved the accolade of being a professional badminton player, and represented England on the senior national stage.
I have represented Lincolnshire as a junior and senior player, and currently play in the senior first team. I am also the current Lincolnshire county champion in Ladies and Mixed doubles.
Alongside, I have won numerous medals across Bronze and Copper BE tournaments.
I have now embarked on my coaching journey, having passed my level 2 qualification earlier this year, with the aim to assist the junior county setup, alongside senior players looking to improve their game.
I’ve been playing badminton on and off for over 15 years, starting in an after-school club and later joining a junior development squad.
After a break from the game, I picked it back up when I moved to Yorkshire in 2018—and haven’t looked back since. I’ve been lucky to play for some brilliant clubs like Pontefract BC, where I was part of a few title-winning teams, and Batley BC, which helped me fall back in love with the sport.
These days, I play for Garforth in the Yorkshire League, where I’m still learning so much as we compete against some of the best in the region. Competition-wise, I mainly focus on OS and XD events, where I have picked up a range of medals in local tournaments and earned a couple of Bronze medals in BE events—still driven and chasing that top spot!
I have been playing badminton since I was 6 years old. My parents met at a local badminton club, so I have been around the sport since I was 4 weeks old!
I have represented my county, Yorkshire, for the last 4 years, starting in the under-12s team when I was 8 years old and moving into under 14s team at age 10.
I play regularly in national tournaments and have won over 40 medals in singles, mixed doubles and level doubles.
This season will be my first full season playing for Pontefract Badminton Club in their Castleford league, Leeds league and Yorkshire league teams alongside my mum.
My love of badminton started at home, inspired by my dad, before I began playing more competitively at university in St Andrews. Since then, the sport has been a constant thread through my life, both on and off the court.
Much of my game was shaped by coaching from Dan Travers, who left me with one permanently lodged phrase in a Scottish accent: “Where am I going?” This is a question I still ask myself to prompt the split step now!
Since moving back home to Leeds, I’ve played across most of the West Yorkshire leagues for a variety of teams and managed to rack up some silverware along the way: Ladies A and Mixed A at the Huddersfield League Handicap Tournament, Ladies and Mixed at the Barnsley League Handicap Tournament, Castleford Division 2/3 Ladies, and Women’s Singles B gold at Bristol Swifts Cup.
Off the court, I’ve been equally involved behind the scenes. I’ve been a secretary at Ossett Badminton Club since 2018 and joined the Huddersfield League Committee in 2019. I was also proud to support the creation of ladies' tournaments in the Barnsley League — something I hope encouraged more women to get involved in competitive play.
I’m now (going to be) making the move to Morpeth and am excited to find a new club and leagues to compete in. I’m looking forward to getting involved in the badminton community up there, both as a player and in whatever way I can contribute off the court.
